Dr Wayne Birchall brings a wealth of experience in both general and specialised ophthalmology. He graduated from Cambridge University and London Hospital Medical College in 1983 and initially pursued vocational training in General Practice. Dr Birchall then spent six years as a General Practitioner, primarily serving the Scottish Highlands. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2007.

In 2004, Dr. Birchall completed his specialist training in Ophthalmology at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. He further honed his expertise with a Clinical Fellowship in Glaucoma at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand, under the mentorship of Professor Tony Wells.

After serving as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in New Zealand for seven years, Dr. Birchall spent three years in Port Macquarie before establishing his practice at Forster Eye Surgery in 2017. As a general ophthalmologist, he is adept at managing a wide array of eye conditions and performing various surgeries, including cataract, glaucoma, pterygium and eyelid surgery. He subspecialises in glaucoma management and surgery and has published several research papers on surgical techniques and clinical outcomes.

Dr Birchall is also dedicated to overseas development work. He has participated in eye care expeditions to Bougainville and Fiji (2006-2008) and has recently collaborated with the Fred Hollows Foundation in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, he serves as a visiting lecturer for the Cambodian Ophthalmologists Training Programme and the Pacific Eye Institute in Fiji.

Since 2017, Dr Birchall has been an integral part of Forster Eye Surgery, where he continues to provide exceptional care and expertise to his patients.
